I was driving
home last night from New Bern on highway 70. Over to my left, a
bright light was shining in my face. When I turned to look, I
was awed by a beautiful full moon. It was such a clear night,
stars twinkling, and the moon so clear and bright. Several
thoughts came to mind. First, how could anyone doubt there is a
God when looking at such a marvelous sight? Genesis 1:16 says,
“God made two great lights-the greater light to govern the day
and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the
stars.”
As I
contemplated the glory of the moon, I thought about it being a
reflection of the sun. I thought about how fortunate I am to
have electric lights, and what it would be like without them.
This particular night, the moon was so bright I could clearly
see around me. Then I thought how difficult it is to be
submerged into total darkness. To God be the glory, who set….the
moon and stars to govern the night; His love endures forever. (Psalm
136:9). Even when
setting the moon and stars in the heavens, God was thinking of
us. Who could imagine such a system, one that has light to bring
us energy and warmth as bright as the sun, and the moon, which
is a strong reflection of that light? Praise God that he has
given us light and a love that endures forever.
The moon is a
large mass that reflects the sun on one side, but on the other
it is dark and cold, just like me. Without the Holy Spirit I am
in darkness. But with Jesus in my heart, I am reflection of
Him. The moon has phases where it doesn’t always reflect a
strong bright image – just like me when I don’t let the light of
God shine through to others. “The city does not need the sun or
the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light,
and the Lamb is its lamp.” Revelation 21:22
I thank God for
the lamb, His guidance, His brilliance, and the fact that He can
shine through me.
Thank you for
the light in others who guide me when I falter. Lord, shine
brightly through me so others can be inspired by your glory.
Forgive me of my sin and darkness, and let your glory shine
around me so that others will know you. Amen.
